表面看来，詹姆斯（罗伯特·雷德福 Robert Redford 饰）只是一个普通的中年男人，可实际上，一段晦暗的历史让他至今依旧是FBI追捕和调查的对象。这几十年来，为了过上平静的生活，詹姆斯不得不隐姓埋名，切断了和过去的一切联系。 一次偶然中，记者本（希亚·拉博夫 Shia LaBeouf 饰）发现了詹姆斯的行踪，一直都梦想着出人头地的他立刻全身心的投入到了调查詹姆斯的行动中去。发现自己的秘密已经泄露，詹姆斯不得不采取行动，他拜访了曾经的同伴们，希望能够通过他们的证词来证明自己的清白，与此同时，随着挖掘的深入，本渐渐发现，他所以为的真相或许并不正确。
